5G Technology and its Applications

Fifth-generation wireless, or 5G, is the latest iteration of cellular technology. Its engineered to greatly increase the speed and responsiveness of wireless networks. With 5G Technology, data transmitted over wireless broadband connections could travel at rates as high as 20 Gbps by some estimates. It will be exceeding wireline network speeds as well as offer latency of 1 ms or lower for uses that require real-time feedback. It will also enable a sharp increase in the amount of data transmitted over wireless systems. Which is due to more available bandwidth and advanced antenna technology.

There’s no arguing that mobile communications are transforming modern life. It’s likely that 5G bring even more changes. 5G Technology is the fifth generation of mobile wireless systems. It’s a way for devices to send and receive data without being plugged into a wall in your home or at the office. 5G might enable driverless cars, delivery drones, and may even replace the Wi-Fi in your home and office.

How does 5G Technology work?

5G uses radio waves or radio frequency energy to transmit and receive voice and data connecting our communities. In addition to delivering faster connections and greater capacity, a very important advantage of 5G is the fast response time referred to as latency.

Latency is the time taken for devices to respond to each other over the wireless network.  3G networks had a typical response time of 100 milliseconds. 4G is around 30 milliseconds. And 5G will be as low as 1 millisecond.  This is virtually instantaneous opening up a new world of connected applications.

5G will provide the speed, low latency as well as connectivity to enable a new generation of applications, services and business opportunities that have not been seen before.

There are three major categories of use case for 5G:

  1. Firstly, Massive machine to machine communications
  2. Secondly, Ultra-reliable low latency communications
  3. Finally, Enhanced mobile broadband

For communities, 5G will enable the connection of billions of devices for-

  • Smart cities
  • Enhance health care
  • Smart schools and smart homes
  • Smart and safer vehicles
  • Education, and provide a safer and more efficient place to live.

For businesses and industry, 5G and IoT will provide wealth of data allowing them to gain insights into their operations. Businesses will

  • Firstly,Operate and make key decisions driven by data
  • Secondly,Innovate in agriculture
  • Smart farms and manufacturing
  • Paving the way for cost savings
  • Finally, Better customer experience and long-term growth.

New and Emerging technologies such as virtual and augmented reality will be accessible by everyone. However, Virtual reality provides connected experiences that were not possible before. With 5G and VR you will be able to:

  • Firstly, Travel to your favourite city
  • Secondly, Watch a live football match with the feeling of being at the ground
  • Finally, Even be able to inspect real estate and walk through a new home all from the comfort of your couch.

5G will keep us connected in tomorrow’s smart cities, smart homes and smart schools, and enable opportunities that we haven’t even thought of yet.

5G is currently being developed and trialled ready for commercial launch from 2020.  Widespread availability of 5G services- expected by 2025.

Applications of 5G Technology

High speed mobile network

5G will revolutionize the mobile experience with supercharged wireless network. It can support up to 10 to 20 GBPS of data download speed. It is equivalent to a fiber optic Internet connection accessed wirelessly. Compared to conventional mobile transmission technologies, voice and high-speed data can simultaneously transfer efficiently in 5G. Low latency is one of the most important features of 5G technology which is significant for autonomous driving and mission critical applications. 5G networks are capable of latency less than a millisecond.

Mobile downloads will be much faster, always on, always connected and responsive mobile Internet offer power mobile experience. 5G networks will enable secure access to cloud storage, access of enterprise applications, run powerful tasks with greater processing power virtually.

5G wireless technology will open greater opportunity for new device manufactures and application developers. New VoIP devices and smart devices will introduce in market and thus more job opportunities as well.

Entertainment and Multimedia

5G can provide 120 frames per second, high resolution and higher dynamic range video streaming without interruption. Audiovisual experience will be rewritten after the implementation of latest technologies powered by 5G wireless. Augmented reality and virtual reality require HD video with low latency. 5G network is powerful enough to power AR and VR with amazing virtual experience. HD virtual reality games are getting popular and many companies are investing on VR based gaming. High speed 5G network can offer better gaming experience with high speed Internet.

5G will require 4G in early stages

When a 5G connection is established, the User’s Equipment will connect to both the 4G network to provide the control signalling and to the 5G network to help provide the fast data connection by adding to the existing 4G capacity. Essentially with this design, the 5G network is complementing the existing 4G network.

  • Up to 10Gbps data rate- 10 to 100x improvement over 4G and 4.5G networks
  • 1-millisecond latency
  • 1000x bandwidth per unit area
  • Up to 100x number of connected devices per unit area (compared with 4G LTE)
  • 999% availability
  • 100% coverage
  • 90% reduction in network energy usage
  • Up to 10-year battery life for low power IoT devices

MIMO – Beam Steering

Firstly, Beam steering is a technology that allows the Massive MIMO base station antennas to direct the radio signal to the users and devices rather than in all directions. Secondly, the beam steering technology uses advanced signal processing algorithms to determine the best path for the radio signal to reach the user. Therefore, this increases efficiency as it reduces interference (unwanted radio signals). Multiple element base station – greater capacity, multiple users, faster data. Aditionally, 5G Technology will use ‘Massive’ MIMO antennas that have multiple elements or connections to send and receive more data simultaneously. The benefit to users is that more people can simultaneously connect to the network and maintain high throughput. The overall physical size of the 5G Massive MIMO antennas will be similar to 4G. However, with higher frequency, the individual antenna element size is smaller allowing more elements in same physical case.
