Trying to click picture with a beautiful background, at the beach or maybe at some famous place is always a struggle because of all the people there. Places with good views are usually crowded and it is almost impossible to get a perfect picture without anyone photobombing it. Lucky for you, there’s finally an app out in the market that lets you remove the unwanted people from your photo background and give you a perfect picture just how you want it.
Bye bye camera app uses Artificial Intelligence to remove humans from the picture and paints over the background. This app is created as an art project by Damjanski, a New York based artist and two of his friends Andrej and Pavel from Russia who are all a part of “Do something good” which is a collective where artists and coders collaborate and create projects.
The app uses an open-source object detection algorithm, YOLO (You Only Look Once) which is an object classifier that quickly finds the outline of a person in the picture and then requires a combination of AI systems to cover up the blanks with a system like Adobe’s content-aware fill.
Since the app is an experiment, it is not perfect. It doesn’t crop out the people flawlessly but sometimes leaves some mess and pixels behind in the afternoon. It can’t be used for professional purposes yet but is good for fun. This app is more of an art project than a solution and intends to make you think about humanity, world and the future. Since it removes humans from the pictures, it is based on the concept of ‘post-human era’ and makes us think about the future of the earth after humans. Talking about the future of the app, it could turn out to be an inspiration for more apps using AI for the same purpose and what’s just an experiment today could be a complete practical solution an year or two down the line.
Bye bye camera is only available for iOS as of now and can be purchased from the App Store at $2.99.
