Contact Lenses – How To Stop Them From Damaging Your Eyes

A large portion of the population needs some sort of visual aid to see properly. Out of these, some wear glasses, some wear contact lenses and some both. Some people don’t use aid even though they need it.

Contact lenses are thin lenses placed directly on the surface of the eye. They usually cover the entire cornea. They work the same way as glasses do, except they provide better peripheral vision, and do not collect moisture or perspiration. Hence, some people prefer them over glasses. Contact lenses are ocular prosthetic devices used by over 150 million people worldwide. They are worn for multiple reasons, such as functional, cosmetic, or therapeutic reasons.

Anything can be used as a weapon of destruction if it falls into the wrong hands. Similarly, if not used correctly, lenses can cause immense harm. This might include complete or partial loss of vision, corneal ulcers, eye infections, etc.

These problems can be avoided by using them properly.

What are things that need to be taken care of when wearing contact lenses?

Let’s find out.

Wearing for only regulated amounts of time

Eyes are one of the only parts of the human body that absorb oxygen directly from the air. Lenses usually cover the entire cornea and prevent it from absorbing the required amount of oxygen. This can be avoided by wearing them for the prescribed amount of time, or wearing different kinds of lenses. There are lenses that are made of a material that transmits more oxygen than conventional soft contact lens materials. Gas permeable contacts move a significant amount with every time the wearer blinks, and allow fresh tears to move under the lenses.

Properly cleaning lenses and case

Although contact wearers use a cleaning solution to clean their lenses before every wear, it is important to clean them thoroughly. Many people use “no-rub” solutions, but studies show that rubbing them with the cleaning solution is more efficient. They also begin to accumulate more dirt and germs as they get older. Hence, it is necessary to clean them before every. It is also important to clean the contacts case. Harmful microorganisms can accumulate in the case and lead to eye infections. It should be cleaned thoroughly and kept out to dry while the lenses are being used. It should also be replaced every 3 months.

Replacing lenses

No matter how thoroughly the lenses are cleaned, they continue to accumulate germs and dirt as they grow older. The longer the lenses are used, higher their potential to reduce oxygen flow to the eyes and cause damage. Hence, contact lenses should be replaced as prescribed by the doctor.
