The coronavirus pandemic has had a huge effect on national economies as well as the global economies. Lockdowns imposed because of the virus have forced shops, clubs, restaurants to shut down. Even global companies like Amazon have faced losses. However, the people who have been the most affected by these economic losses are the people at the bottom of the corporate hierarchy – the daily wage workers.
While many of these people have lost out on their jobs, others have received increased hourly pay from their employers to ensure that they keep working.
However, one company’s employees are asking for these changes to be made permanent.

WHO ARE THE WORKERS DEMANDING CHANGES MADE DURING THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC TO BE MADE PERMANENT?
Amazon brought about some positive changes for its workers because of the coronavirus pandemic. The company increased their hourly pay by $2 and added 5 minutes to their break time. They also eradicated productivity feedback, which proved to be an incentive for workers to work faster.
However, Amazon’s workers are demanding that these changes are carried on to the post-pandemic period.
Christian Zamarrón, an Amazon warehouse worker in Chicago spoke to TechCrunch about the same –
“They’re talking about taking that away. I don’t think they should take it away. These are things we need not just during a pandemic but all the time.”
A couple of months ago, about 40 Amazon warehouse workers from around the world protested in Madrid. After that, the workers formed an organization of Amazon workers from Germany, Poland, Spain, France, Slovakia and the United States. The organization is called Amazon Workers International.

As its first act as an organization, AWI sent a letter to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and Amazon Director of UK Customer Fulfillment Stefano Perego, demanding changes made during the pandemic to be made permanent.
On April 24, Amazon announced the extension of increased hourly pay to May 16.
“Our international solidarity will definitely grow,” Zamarrón said.
He added –
“This is a very important aspect of what we’re doing and what any worker movement should do, which is expressing coordinated international demands and coordinated international actions.”
