Reports are coming in from Australia about a group of researchers claiming to have found the cure for coronavirus.
The spread of the virus has been labelled a pandemic by the WHO, and the number of confirmed cases is rising everywhere.
WHO FOUND THE CURE FOR CORONAVIRUS?
Professor David Paterson and his team have claimed that their drug has been able to wipe out the virus in test tubes. Paterson works at the University of Queensland Centre for Clinical Research.
The team is using drugs which are traditionally used to treat HIV and malaria. The drug used to treat malaria is called Chloroquine, and the other drug is an HIV-suppressing combination lopinavir/ritonavir.
They researchers even said that their drug made the virus “disappear” in infected patients.
They said “Patients would end up with no viable coronavirus in their system at all after the end of therapy.”
These drugs are already registered and readily available in Australia.
“What we want to do at the moment is a large clinical trial across Australia, looking at 50 hospitals, and what we’re going to compare is one drug, versus another drug, versus the combination of the two drugs,” said Professor Paterson.
WHAT IS THE STATUS OF THE PANDEMIC?
The spread of the novel coronavirus is nowhere near slowing down. The number of confirmed cases is rising. Moreover, infections are spreading to newer countries every day.
Globally, 170,000 people have been infected, with the death toll at more than 6,500.
Iran and Italy are the biggest clusters of the virus outside China.
Lockdowns have been implemented in various countries. Some countries are shutting down schools, colleges, theatres. People are being advised to practise social distancing to stop the spread of the virus.
Some countries are also on lockdown, for example, Italy has implemented a nationwide lockdown.
