The latest analysis regarding the novel coronavirus might have some frightening impacts on the way that we understand masks. For a long time now, masks have been our primary line of defence.
The fact that the virus can travel through talking to the other person was a major reason behind the upsurge in mask sales. People considered this as their go-to solution in order to protect themselves. However, the latest results show certain chinks in this armour.
According to these revelations, the virus can live for up to one week on the surface of the mask. This has serious health repercussions.
Coronavirus Update – World Leaders That Tested Positive
WHAT ELSE DOES THE RESEARCH REVEAL ABOUT CORONAVIRUS?
The research was conducted by the University of Hong Kong (HKU) and published in the medical journal The Lancet. Researchers tested how long the Coronavirus survives on various surfaces at room temperatures.
The results showed that it lasted on tissues and printing papers for less than three hours. On clothes like a cotton lab jacket and treated wood, it goes by the second day. It lasted for two to four days on banknotes and glass while it remained on stainless steel and plastic for four to seven days.
However, the most shocking finding was in the case of the surgical mask. As per the research, the mask can survive for a maximum of a staggering seven days on the surface.
“This is exactly why it is very important if you are wearing a surgical mask you don’t touch the outside of the mask, because you can contaminate your hands and if you touch your eyes you could be transferring the virus to your eyes,” Malik Peiris, a clinical and public health virologist, told the South China Morning Post.
The research only confirms that the maximum safety standards need to be applied in order to protect yourself.
