Donald Trump And His Feud With The WHO Amidst The Coronavirus Pandemic

Nothing in the world is as it was a month ago. The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has rocked the world. It has forced organizations and even countries all across the world to suspend their operations and direct their resources to fight the outbreak. However, some things can never be stopped, even while there’s a pandemic going on. President Donald Trump and the WHO are in the middle of a feud.

WHAT IS GOING ON BETWEEN DONALD TRUMP AND WHO?

Donald Trump has accused WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus of minimizing the threat that coronavirus posed to the world. Additionally, he has also said that the organization is siding with China.

“They said more body bags … He [Tedros]  would have been much better serving the people he’s supposed to serve if they gave a correct analysis. Everything was China-centric: ‘Everything is going to be fine, no human-to-human [transmission].'”

He added –

“He wanted me to keep the borders open. I closed the border to spite him, it was a hard decision to make at the time. We made a decision against the World Health Organization.”

The President also brought to light the vast difference in the funding provided to the WHO by the USA and China. It is $400 million, and $40 million respectively.

“Yet, everything seems to be China’s way. That’s not right, that’s not fair to us, and honestly, it’s not fair to the world. I can’t believe he’s talking about politics, look at the relationship they have with China.”

Following this, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced that the country was re-evaluating its WHO funding.

HOW DID THE ORGANIZATION RESPOND TO THIS?

At a press briefing in Geneva, Ghebreyesus responded to Trump’s comments.

“The focus of all political parties should be to save their people. Please don’t politicise this virus.”

“If you want to have many more body bags, then you do it. If you don’t want many more body bags, then you refrain from politicising it … We will have many body bags in front of us if we don’t behave.”
