Facebook bug sees old chat messages pop up for users

A strange Facebook problem has seen users confronted with the past. People have reported a weird bug where old chat messages, some from years ago, are popping up again through Messenger’s tabs.

The issue is particularly troubling for certain users who have seen from messages from loved ones who have passed away, or from people they haven’t spoken to in a long time.

A Facebook spokesperson told Media that the company had fixed the issue in a statement:

“Earlier today, some people may have experienced Facebook resending older messages,” it read. “The issue, caused by software updates, has been fully resolved. We’re sorry for any inconvenience.”- says a Facebook spokesman.

Repeated Incidents:

It’s not the first time Facebook has dredged up memories we’d prefer to forget.

This is not the first time something like that happens accidentally. In 2015, Facebook was starting to clear painful memories for people using the On-Day call-back function.

That’s because the underlying algorithm did not seem to know how to distinguish between the festive, cheerful messages that were designed to resurface, and that about tragedy that is often as much.

Serious Concern for Users:

Some users have expressed concern that the bug could resurface conversations or past histories they would much rather forget. Unless you actively delete the history between you and another user, Messenger retains the entirety of your back-and-forth conversations, stretching back years.

Coding Issue or a Bug with messages:

Although this time it looks more like an issue with code than a strategic failure of human understanding.

And to be honest, vast majority of people who complain about bug just seem to regard it as random. And questioning strangeness of the social network that no one can explain at this time.

But knowing that others are being chased by painful memories, a good reminder that Facebook is responsible for an enormous amount of online identifying and the details of our personal lives, and the management of that data has been received almost constantly critically this year.

When the platform launched On This Day last year, the feature-criticized for bringing up old photos. And posts that might be painful or otherwise unwelcome. Facebook later introduced the ability to edit posts and control what memories you see.

We will certainly update this story when the company provides more information about what is causing the problem.
