Facebook’s Oculus Quest to make VR popular

Virtual Reality is a technology that immerses users in a virtual environment. Facebook unveiled a wireless virtual-reality headset called Oculus Quest. Oculus Quest is a virtual reality headset it hopes will rejuvenate the VR industry. It is an attempt to help popularize the developing technology. It is affordable as it is priced at $399. Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, said that device would offer types of VR experiences that previously required a device to be connected to a high-powered PC.

Zuckerberg said, “People are more likely to use a technology that they can wear while moving freely”. The headset will go on sale in 2019 for $399. It will come with hand controllers to give people a sense of presence in virtual reality.


The Quest looks like a typical VR headset on the outside. It also has set of cameras built into its sides. The camera looks out into the real world to pinpoint your location in a room.

Oculus Hybrid Apps let you use 2D and 3D software in VR

The new Oculus Hybrid system lets you see both 2D and 3D models in VR at the same time.  Hybrid Apps were announced at the Oculus Connect 5 conference. Hybrid apps are built atop the Oculus Dash virtual desktop system announced last year. Facebook sees VR as the next great advance in human communication after mobile phones.

Facebook acquired Oculus VR in 2014. The social media company has created virtual spaces for users to hang out and watch movies together. However, They want people to use VR to do more than just to play games on it.

The Quest is the latest VR product that meet different needs. They expect people to buy 8.7 million VR headsets this year. Last year they sold 7.1 million headsets and the year before that they sold 6.7 million.

The Oculus Go went on sale in early 2018. The Oculus Rift is a $399 headset that requires a connection to a personal computer. The $130 Gear VR goggles work by attaching them to a Samsung Electronics Co. phone.

In the future, any game made for Oculus will work on any of the devices, Zuckerberg said. However, he also said that he would like 10 million people to use his company devices.
