The conscience of the United States of America was recently shaken after a black man who went by the name of Ahmaud Arbery was killed by gunshot. It exposed the underlying racism in society even after years of reform.
Finally some good news has come as it is being revealed that a father and a son in Georgia have been charged with the killing. This has been of some solace to the close ones of Arbery. The people who have been charged are Gregory McMichael and his son Travis McMichael.
They have adopted the classic defence of suspecting Ahmaud Arbery of being a robber. All of this has presented many questions. It has also inspired political responses from various circles which we’ll read about.
WHAT CHARGES ARE THE PEOPLE WHO SHOT AHMAUD ARBERY FACING?
Gregory McMichael had earlier told the police that he and his son Travis McMichael had run after Ahmed Arbery suspecting him of being a robber when they saw him running. Meanwhile, Arbery’s mother Wanda Cooper thinks that her son who is a former football player was just jogging in the Satilla Shores neighbourhood.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation news release said the McMichaels “confronted Arbery with two firearms. During the encounter, Travis McMichael shot and killed Arbery.” No other details were immediately released.
Gregory McMichael served as an investigator for Glynn County District Attorney Jackie Johnson. He retired last year. The connection caused Johnson to recuse herself from the case.
The video showing the shooting draw the ire of Democratic Presidential nominee Joe Biden. He has wide support among the black community. Moreover, he is being looked at as a potential source of help in this unfortunate incident.
He had called Arbery’s death a “murder.” During an online roundtable, he compared the video to seeing Arbery “lynched before our very eyes.” That was enough to shock the nation.
