If you equate pulling all-nighters to hard work and dedication and believe it is an absolute requisite for you, you might need to reconsider you philosophy. The cons of sleep deprivation at night far outweigh all the pros, and can cause some serious long-term damage to your immunity and overall health.
A study published May 21, 2018, in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) showed that staying awake at night and sleeping during the day for even just one 24-hour period can rapidly lead to changes in more than 100 proteins in the blood, including ones that have an effect on blood sugar, immune function, and metabolism. Time to rethink your sleep patterns?
- Destroys ability to learn
Almost all of us must’ve pulled off multiple all-nighters during our college times to pass an exam. Might’ve even got us a few more marks, wouldn’t it? However, studies suggest that not sleeping at night can destroy your cognitive abilities, and in the long run destroy your memory as well.
- Causes Depression
WebMD reported that people who consistently get less than six hours of sleep a night are more likely to suffer from anxiety and depression. “Lack of sleep caused by another medical illness or by personal problems can make depression worse.” In essence it’s a vicious cycle – sleep deprivation causes depression which in turn cause insomnia and worsens overall physical and mental health.
- Poor Judgement
Lack of adequate sleep/sleeping at incorrect times causes errors in judgement and logical analysis. According to WebMD. “Lack of sleep can affect our interpretation of events. This hurts our ability to make sound judgments because we may not assess situations accurately and act on them wisely.” It is very much the equivalent of feeling drunk or intoxicated, without actually being so.
- Disruption in eating and drinking patterns
By not sleeping at the appropriate times, there are major increases in the amount of acid secretions in the digestive tract which leads to acidity and horrible burps. Over time, this compounds to major digestive issues and moreover doesn’t allow you to eat either.
The list is endless, and all-nighters can result in permanent health effects, especially if practiced by more aged people. Hence, it should be avoided at all costs.
