Consumption of certain type of food is found to keep brain healthy for years. According to a study, people who take a diet rich in vegetables, fruits, legumes, olive oil and nuts are at lower risk of developing neurodegenerative diseases later in life.
While, another study found that those who adhered closest to the Mediterranean diet had the highest cognitive function throughout the observational study of 10- year period.
A mediterranean diet includes habitual consumption of whole fruits, vegetables, whole grains, olive oil, nuts legumes, fish and reduced consumption of red meat and alcohol. Studies found that routine intake of fish was associated with higher rates of cognitive functioning and the lowest rate of declining over time.
Mediterranean diet has been shown to improve cardiovascular health and may in turn also reduce one’s risk of dementia.
Whereas, a typical western diet which includes red meat, sugar, salt, fat, refined grains and minimal of wholegrains, has been associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease, therefore contributing to faster and earlier brain-damaging.
