Instagram will now hide likes in the US. The likes initially disappeared in Canada and later in Australia, Brazil, Ireland, Italy, Japan, and New Zealand.
Will the likes disappear?
The likes won’t disappear. But will simply be hidden from it. This means, you’ll not be able to see the number of people liking a post on your feed. It will only mention all the friends as ‘others’. Those who want to see the names and number of people can tap on ‘others’ and see.

But why is it hiding likes?
The move has been initiated to make Instagram a better and safer place.
Zuckerberg said as much during his keynote, stating: “We want people to be less interested in how many likes a post gets, and focus more on connecting with other people.”
The main focus is to shift the way Z generation youngsters are consuming Instagram. The increasing competition of likes among people can their mental health. Hence, there’s a need to shift their focus and way of perceiving it. The emphasis should be more on sharing quality content and not judging or competing for likes.
This year Instagram has been taking positive actions to make the platform a safer, more inclusive space.
Introduction of private likes will be for some of the users in US on trial basis, which could mark the beginning of a very different Instagram for everyone.
