Corporations have been stepping up to support the Black Lives Matter Movement. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos reiterated his stand on the issue.
Notably, Amazon has been carrying the words “Black Lives Matter” on its website. This has also led to some angry responses from customers. A large number of e-mails were sent to the company questioning its support for this noble cause.
Bezos decided to respond to these e-mails vis his official Instagram account. He stated that such threats won’t stop his support for this movement. In fact, it strengthened his resolve further.
WHAT DID JEFF BEZOS SAY?
As per Jeff Bezos, this was a warning to all sending these e-mails. He still supported the cause.
“This sort of hate shouldn’t be allowed to hide in the shadows,” wrote Bezos. “It’s important to make it visible. This is just one example of the problem.”
“You’re the kind of customer I’m happy to lose.”
He further added –
“I support this movement we see happening all around us, and my stance won’t change.”
He also responded to the claims of “All Lives Matter” mentioned in the email –
“Black lives matter speaks to the racism and the disproportionate risk that Black people face in our law enforcement and justice system. I have a 20-year-old son, and I simply don’t worry that he might be choked to death while being detained one day. It’s not something I worry about.”
“Black parents can’t say the same.”
Notably, Amazon has been called into question for the lack of diversity in its employees. Even though 26% of its global workforce is black, only 8.3% in the managerial positions are black. This has led to allegations of hypocrisy against the company.
It would be better if Jeff Bezos backs up his words with actions. That would require him to make some structural changes in the company. Then the people will think that he actually means what he’s saying rather than just tokenistic allyship.
