If Marvel staked a claim for being a box office blockbuster with Avengers: Endgame, DC gave the perfect reply. The R-rated Joker has danced its way to a worldwide box office record.
According to Warner Bros. the Todd Phillips-directed blockbuster is set to breach the $1 billion mark in global ticket sales. This would make the DC film, the first R-rated film in history to achieve such a feat. This movie stars Joaquin Phoenix in a tale about the violent rise of the titular Batman franchise villain.
The film took just over a month to reach the $1 billion target, following its release on Oct. 4. According to the latest estimate, the worldwide box office total stands at $999.1 million. However, it is expected to push past $1 billion shortly. It is also the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever made (unadjusted for inflation).
Joker previously obliterated the record for the biggest October opening weekend in movie history. Around the time of its release, it pocketed $93.5 million within the first three days in wide release.
Trailing Joker on the all-time R-rated chart is The Matrix Reloaded, which made $828 million around the world in 2003. That was followed by Deadpool 2 and its predecessor with $785 million and $782 million, respectively.
On top of its stellar ticket sales, Joker is also eyeing heavy Oscar attention. In fact, a number of critics and audience members are praising Phoenix’s performance as one of the best of his career.
Joker also boasts of a star-studded cast of Robert De Niro, Frances Conroy, and Zazie Beetz.
Set in the early ’80s in Gotham City, ‘Joker’ follows the life of Arthur Fleck, a happy soul who is considered a freak because of a health condition that makes him laugh involuntarily. Sharing a rundown apartment with his ailing mom, Arthur struggles to make money as a part-time clown.
Despite his given condition and inspired by his late-night television show idol, Murray Franklin, Arthur aspires to be a stand-up comedian. But clearly fate has other plans for him. With every new turn of events, Arthur’s life starts to spiral out of control, and he develops an unhinged alter ego.
