Karlie Kloss is one of the most recognizable names in today’s modeling industry. Having started as a teenager, she made it to Vogue Paris’ “top 30 models of the 2000s” list at the age of 17.
Now, as a 28-year-old, she has the fashion industry’s top names in her portfolio, being a favorite when it comes to castings for fashion shows.
Just as you’d expect a supermodel to be, Karlie is always seen sporting one of the most stylish and glamorous looks at any event she attends.
So, Vogue spoke to Karlie Kloss about her world of fashion and beauty.
WHAT DID KARLIE KLOSS SAY?
“Look, I’m all about skincare. It has taken a lot of trial and error to find what’s right. I never had a problem with my skin until I turned 20 – until then I don’t think I used more than lip balm! But then I started to get hormonal acne on my chin and T-zone. So now I have to work for it. It’s about really cleansing and exfoliating on a regular basis. And I’m a big fan of masks. Estée Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair Powerfoil mask is amazing – I’ve used it on so many airplanes. It has a serum in there that really kind of hydrates and the foil locks it in. So I use masks, a serum, and a cream. Oh and eye cream… I’m a sucker for just about anything. I’ve been to Seoul and Japan and it’s crazy there. I bought so many masks, and snail mucus and all these random things.”
“I’ve kind of found great people in every city. In LA I love Kate Somerville, in New York I love Georgia Louise and Joanna Vargas. And I love massages. When you work hard, not only in your job but also physically, you really have to nurture yourself. You have to take time to rest, and massages I think are a wonderful thing. I find them really meditative. I get lots of good ideas, you kind of process things.”
“I am a big fan of less is more. Especially if you have a great foundation of glowing skin, I think you actually should err on the side of less. But I love statement bold lips for an event, so maybe a bright or dark red. And I’m not big on eyeshadow but I love liner and a great lash. More simple, more natural. Again, the most captivating look is when someone is radiating that inner confidence. When you feel really beautiful, you exude it.”
BEAUTY WHILE TRAVELING
“Masks of course – I’m shameless with wearing sheet masks on the plane. I have multiple masks on, compression tights and socks, an extra set of pyjamas… I have a kit that is really quite impressive. I have a bag packed always. It’s organised with clear zipper compartments for everything I need. You’ve gotta be prepared.”
“I ran the marathon in New York City last year which was a new challenge for body and mind! There’s hope for anyone – if I can do it, anyone can. I swear I’ve never been a runner my whole life, so running a marathon is the most insane task that I never thought I’d be able to accomplish. But with training, it is possible, I promise. Running has been something I’ve gotten much more into. Also I love light strength training – high reps using different weights and things that build long and lean muscle.”
“I love to pop in my headphones and do some meditation, just 10 minutes to myself. And I love to watch Netflix, I love to read, I now love to go for a run… if I have an hour to myself I love to do something physical, actually. I love listening to audiobooks when I run, you distract yourself from the fact that you’re doing it! I love listening – I’m a real audio learner. I retain the information better that way.”
GROWING UP WITH 3 SISTERS
“My sisters and I are really close in age. My older sister is three years older than me and the twins are two years younger, so we all grew up in the same school at the same time. We each challenge one another – we have different strengths, and so we really complement one another. When we got in fights when we were little I had to learn to defend myself, I was pushed to be stronger at things I’m weaker at. Sisters are built-in best friends. Brutally honest best friends! You need somebody to do that.”
“I think confidence is the sexiest quality a woman can have. For me, in my own body I feel most confident when I’m strong and when I’m taking care of myself and feeling energised. For me that starts from the inside out and taking care of my mind. I meditate and I try – even with all the crazy travel – to eat food that fuels me and work out to really feel the strongest that I can. I love the Headspace app. We all live these modern, busy lives, so finding ways to take care of yourself is so important. Education and knowledge is a superpower too. I feel really strong when I’m challenging myself. I feel like what I’ve been able to experience through Kode With Klossy has been an amazing gift that keeps on giving. Just being a small part of these smart women’s journeys… I feel like I’m getting more than I’m giving.”
BEST PART OF BEING A WOMAN
“I think about this a lot and I feel really grateful to be a woman in this day and age. I feel like there are so many extraordinary women of the past who have afforded us the rights and the life we have today. I think women are so unbelievably strong and resilient. I have three sisters and my mum was an incredible role model for all of us. I think the best thing about being a woman is the duality of strength and sensitivity. We’re very empathetic but are also capable of anything. I also love the relationship between women, the sisterhood. There’s something so powerful about strong women supporting one another.”
