Makar Sankranti 2021: Significance and Celebration

Makar Sankranti or Maghi is one of the most prominent Hindu festivals, celebrated with great enthusiasm in India and Nepal. Almost every year it falls on 14th or 15th January.

On this day people engage in various spiritual activities such as taking bath in holy water bodies, worshipping and thanking sun for their prosperity.
It is also celebrated by flying kites, lighting bonfires, decorating homes and preparing sweets with jaggery and sesame.

The festival is largely celebrated across India with different names at different parts of the country. For instance, Lohri in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi (on 13th Jan), Pongal in Tamil Nadu, Khichdi in Bihar etc.

But one common thing about this festival is that it encourages people to engage in altruistic activities by serving the poor with some food or donating money, while also engaging in spirituality.
