The Novel Corona virus that originated in China has spread fear among the population. With its high vulnerability to middle-aged and elder adults, it shows men are at higher risk.
The recent analysis published by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention published the largest analysis of coronavirus cases to date.
It clearly showed increasing rates of men dying from corona.
While, the rate of being affected by corona virus is almost equal for men and women, it was seen that it with men who died more as compared to women infected from it. The death rate among men was 2.8 percent, compared with 1.7 percent among women.
Even during SARS and MERS outbreak, the number of men infected by it was much higher.
The factors leading to this disproportionality according to scientists, include biological as well as lifestyle.
It is observed that women’s immune fight better with infections.
There’s something about the immune system in females that is more exuberant,” said Dr. Janine Clayton, director of the Office of Research on Women’s Health at the National Institutes of Health.
However, in return women are at greater risk of catching autoimmune diseases, like rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, in which the immune system shifts into overdrive and attacks the body’s own organs and tissues.
On an average, 80% of those with autoimmune diseases are immune.
Even when the experiments of SARS Coronavirus was conducted on mice, it was found that male mouse caught the virus much higher. It was female rat’s progesterone to that helps keep her away from diseases.
Also, the lifestyle habits such as smoking was found to affect the immune system. China has the most number of smokers in the world. And, percent of tobacco consumption worldwide. But just over 2 percent of Chinese women smoke, compared with more than half of all men.
Even men are at higher risk of developing Diabetes-2 and high blood pressure at a comparatively early age.
