The murder of George Floyd triggered protests on issues that America has been trying to fight against for a long time – police brutality and violence against black people. Violent protests are taking place across the country, and people are trying to join the fight however they can. Protests across all 50 states sent one message to the government of the country – that the people had had enough. Thus, many public servants have been trying to bring about change, such as banning certain forms of restraints used by the police. Now, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is also trying to do the same.
These protests are also providing more evidence that the fight they’re fighting is real. The police have been seen using excessive force against the protestors.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi wants to take action against that.
WHAT DID NANCY PELOSI DO?
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has asked the Congressional Black Caucus to lead the process of drafting a legislative response to the protests.
“It is time, it is time for us to address the concerns that were being expressed by the protesters,” Pelosi said at a press event.
She added –
“This is not a single incident. We know this is a pattern of behaviour, and we also know the history that brings us to this sad place.”
The positive thing about these protests is that they are gaining bipartisan support.
Republicans such as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Senator Lindsey Graham have acknowledged “egregious wrongs.”
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said –
“It’s certainly something that we need to take a look at.”
“We’ll be talking to our colleagues about what, if anything, is appropriate for us to do in the wake of what’s going on.”
Moreover, there are also reports of the Democrats planning to address the use of excessive force by the police at protests. They plan to get the Senate to publicly condemn Trump for “ordering federal officers to use gas and rubber bullets against Americans who were peaceably protesting.”
