Do you want to know when your Instagram friends are online so that they’re not ignoring you?
Or do you want to avoid being known by all that you are in fact online but you’re just there to scroll through the feed and not in the mood for any Direct Messaging?
Well, if you’re answer is “Yes” for the first question, then your wish has indeed come true. And if you’re answer for the second question is also a “Yes” then unfortunately Instagram’s new feature wouldn’t go well with you.
This is basically because Facebook’s Instagram has announced on the 19th of July, 2018, about a new feature that tells you when your friends are online. Yes, this helps you find out who lied to you and still stayed online, enjoying their feed rather than texting you. But this also means that you would also be shown as online even if you don’t want to.
More Insight –
What exactly is this new feature?
The company said the following in their blog post –
“DMing friends and connecting over the content you love is more fun when you know your friends are there to see it. This update gives you the ability to have more of those real-time conversations while giving you the control to hide your status altogether.
You will only see status for friends who follow you or people who you have talked to in Direct.”
Earlier in the month of January, 2018, Instagram had announced about the “Activity Status” feature. This feature is shown in your Direct Messaging (DM) section. It basically shows the approximate time as to when the user was last active on Instagram.
For example – ‘Active 1h ago’ or ‘Active yesterday’. This was in fact considered as a Time Stamp.
If that wasn’t enough to ruin your hidden Insta-ing time, well now this new “Online Indicator” feature might ruin more of your secret time. It’s basically a green dot which would appear at the bottom right corner of your friend’s profile picture in the DM section. Along with this green dot, under the user’s name, it would be written as “Active Now”.
This online indicator feature would also be visible in other places. For example, when you want to DM a particular post to someone, it would show if they’re online or not. Also, do note that the previous Activity Status feature still remains.
How to disable this Online Indicator feature?
This green dot will be seen to your friends as well as followers. But it would also be visible to any stranger whose DM request you had earlier accepted.
So, now few might wonder how to get rid of this feature?
Well, no issues. It can easily be done by following these simple steps –
Go to Settings > Select Activity Status > Disable the toggle feature (It would be ON by default).
And that’s about it. You won’t be able to see if others are online and they won’t be able to see if you are.
Now that Facebook has made few Instagram features like Messenger, maybe next is WhatsApp. Well, one could only wait and watch.
Also, for those who don’t have Auto-Update of apps, make sure to update Instagram to get the latest features. (It’s available for all iOS and Android phones).
