“Parasite” Wins Oscar For Best Picture, Makes History

At the 2020 Oscar awards, Korean film “Parasite” made history by becoming the first non-English film to win the Academy award for Best Picture.

WHAT IS “PARASITE”?

The movie revolves around the Kim family who takes over the mansion of a rich family. One by one, they start working for the Parks. Ki-Woo, the son, forges university documents to get hired as a tutor.

After him, their daughter Ki-jeong starts to work with the Parks’ son as an art therapist. At the same time, the father cons his way to becoming the chauffeur. Finally, the mother convinces the Parks that their housekeeper Moon-gwang has tuberculosis, and then herself secures the housekeeping gig. Things start to go sideways when Moon-gwang, the old housekeeper returns to the Park family home when they are on a camping trip.

HOW MANY AWARDS DID “PARASITE” WIN?

Bong Joon-ho, the director, won the award for the Best Director. Quentin Tarantino (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), Todd Phillips (Joker), and Martin Scorsese (The Irishman) were some of the nominees in the same category. “Parasite” also defeated Les Misérables, Corpus Christi, Honeyland, and Pain and Glory to win the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film.

Han Jin-won and Bong Joon-ho also won the award for the Best Screenplay for “Parasite”. They defeated Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story), Quentin Tarantino (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), Rian Johnson (Knives Out). Krysty Wilson-Cairns and Sam Mendes (1917) were also in the same race.

Parasite cast

The movie won a total of 4 awards at this year’s Oscars, including a historic Best Picture award. Movies nominated for this award included 1917, Ford v Ferrari, Joker, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, The Irishman, Little Women, Jojo Rabbit, and Marriage Story.

Parasite was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Production Design, but lost to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. It was also a contender in the race for Best Film Editing, but Ford v Ferrari won that award.
