Voice Over Internet Protocol abbreviated as VOIP is a technology by which voice messages can be communicated over Internet Protocol (IP) networks like the Internet. It works like a phone service using the internet rather than the traditional telephone service. In this article, let’s take a look at some lesser-known disadvantages of VOIP.

Less reliable

The quality of the Voice Over Internet Protocol service largely depends on the internet connection. If the traffic on the network is high, the voice quality drops. This is commonly seen in long-distance or international calls where the voice appears distorted. This may lead to a problem, mainly for business calls where communication needs to be quick and action must be taken on the basis of the response.

Affected by power cuts

Unlike normal phones, the Voice Over Internet Protocol phone service requires a regular power supply. Calls are not possible if there is an interruption in the power supply. While the normal phones get current through the telephone line, the VOIP phone needs a generator in case there is no power. So a permanent backup should be there in place.

Cannot trace emergency calls

In normal phones, emergency calls can be correctly tracked. They get diverted to the nearest call center where the exact location can be identified. VOIP communication is between two IP addresses which can be located anywhere in the world. So it is impossible to find the origin of the call.

Security

Internet services have always faced the issue of security. The same is the case with Voice Over Internet Protocol also. Telephone hacking has been a major concern in this regard. Due to the less time given for scanning data packets, the performance of firewalls may be less than satisfactory. VOIP is also affected by worms and viruses. All these pose a threat to security.

Processor issues

The quality of the VOIP calls depends upon the specifications of the PC being used. The processor is allocated to different processes sequentially in multiprogramming. So when you want to execute a program while you are using the phone, the quality of the call tends to decrease. Such issues are always present while working with a computer with less processor speed.
