WhatsApp, which is owned by Facebook since February 2014, has over 1.5 million users worldwide. It is considered as the most widely used instant messaging app.
The app has a variety of features but one of the main problems face by its users, is the media. But WhatsApp had earlier given a solution with the feature of media visibility in its WhatsApp Beta version for Android 2.18.159. And now, after solving its issues, it has officially made a come-back with the version 2.18.194 beta.
What would the Whatsapp’s Media Visibility feature do?
In order to explain this feature, let us consider a scenario which is quite common to all. We are all part of groups, including few groups which have few specimens who tend to send unnecessary picture or videos to the group. Those videos could be avoided by disabling the ‘Media Auto Download’ option but at times you will have to download in order to find if that media is useful or not.
This as a result, could use up a lot of space in your phone’s storage. It would also make your phone hang at times.
Earlier, the only way to avoid this was to go to your gallery and delete them individually. But obviously this was tiresome and indeed difficult to delete older photos or videos in the gallery.
Hence the solution is Media Visibility feature.
According to a WABetaInfo report, WhatsApp has submitted two features to its Google Beta Program. One being the Media Visibility feature and the other being a shortcut for adding new contacts.
With the new Media Visibility feature, you could easily decide whether you want the downloaded media to be visible in your gallery or not. This way, your phone gallery would free up space from storing unnecessary media files.
How to use this feature?
The feature is very use to be used and can be accessed from the contact info option. Just follow these steps –
- Click on a chat (or a group chat).
- Click on the 3 vertical dots at the top right corner.
- Select ‘View Contact’.
- Select the ‘Media Visibility’ option which then shows a dialogue box asking, “Do you want to show newly downloaded media from this chat in your phone’s gallery?”
- You can select ‘Yes’, ‘No’ or ‘Default (yes)’ according to your preference.
The feature works only for newly downloaded media and will not be applicable for photos and videos which are already appearing in the gallery.
Caution: Beta apps are meant for testing and include unreleased features. The app may not behave properly in certain situations. Download the beta version only if you understand the risks.
